2. The Safety Question: Can I Trust Small Finance Banks?
Small finance banks (SFBs) are regulated by RBI & Interest Rates Explained and covered by DICGC deposit insurance up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank. This is the same guarantee as any scheduled commercial bank.
The ₹5 lakh DICGC rule: If Unity SFB failed tomorrow, deposits up to ₹5 lakh per depositor are 100% insured. Deposits above ₹5 lakh carry the risk of loss.
Strategy for high-rate SFB investing:
- Keep any single bank below ₹5 lakh (per PAN)
- Spread across 2–3 SFBs if investing larger amounts
- SFBs with 5+ years of operation and consistent NNPA below 4% are relatively safe
3. Tax-Saving FD vs Regular FD
5-Year Tax-Saving FD:
- Lock-in: 5 years (no premature withdrawal)
- Section 80C eligible: Up to ₹1.5 lakh/year
- Interest: Taxable at slab rate (no special exemption)
- Available at most banks at regular 5-year FD rates
vs ELSS (for same 80C benefit):
- Lock-in: 3 years (shorter)
- Returns: 12–15% CAGR expected (vs 6.5–7% FD)
- Risk: Equity-linked (market risk)
For investors in the 30% bracket with 3+ year horizon: ELSS is almost always better than tax-saving FD for the 80C allocation.
4. Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) — Best Capital-Safe Option
For investors aged 60+, SCSS is superior to FDs:
- Current rate: 8.2% per annum (Q1 FY26) — government-set, reviewed quarterly
- Quarterly interest payouts
- Maximum deposit: ₹30 lakh per person (₹60 lakh for a couple)
- 5-year tenure, extendable by 3 years
- Section 80C eligible (80C deduction on investment)
- Government-backed — zero credit risk
SCSS beats the best large bank FD rate by 1.2–1.5% with sovereign guarantee. Every senior citizen with surplus funds should maximise SCSS before any FD.
The Smart Friend’s Verdict
The best FD rate in India is at a small finance bank — but safety requires staying below the ₹5 lakh DICGC cap per bank. For senior citizens, SCSS at 8.2% is the benchmark that all FD rates should be compared against.
For non-senior investors with 3+ year horizons: FDs are not the answer. Equity mutual funds or hybrid funds produce meaningfully better post-tax real returns.
